Watch Out for Anti-Sabong Politicians

Nowadays, we should not only be aware of narco-politics, but also of animal rights politics.

I was surprise to see on television the other day a tv reporter who has been at the forefront of several animal rights protests in the pasts.

He was there when foreign strip teasers scandalized Quiapo Church. He was there when the white-skinned infiltrators vandalized Manila Zoo and showed the children how malicious humans can be. He was there when two guys, one wearing a chicken suit, created a commotion in front of Araneta Coliseum red gate while the World Slasher Cup was being held.

Immediately, one began to think what this guy has done or if he has enough track record or if he really has the money to run a respectable senatorial campaign. Although, the obvious is that he should be financed by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or the Humane Society, two U.S. based organizations which are responsible for the illegalization of sabong in America.

We hear of a mayoralty candidate arrested for pushing drugs. We read about drug enforcement officials warning us that bigtime pushers are now trying to get their own people in elective positions to protect their interests.

I am not calling the attention of sabong-lovers only. These warning also goes to poultry raisers; egg producers; livestock farmers and the likes because these animal rights groups are drumbeating the idea that animals should not be killed or eaten because they have the same rights as human beings.

In America today, after the animal terrorists have cause the outlawing of cockfighting through the dissemination of lies, PETA and HSUS are now staging pickets in front of McDonald’s and KFC restaurants to scare away customers. They now lead raids on gamefowl farms, animal-testing facilities, poultries, piggeries and cattle farms.

Are we ready to counter the onslaught of these groups in the Philippines or are we just playing stubborn, over confident or simply does not care. Scrutinize who you will vote for now rather than curse them later when they are already making laws for us.

How about a joke to beat the summer heat. This one was sent to me by email by my friend Kelly Everly of Kentucky.

OLD BROODCOCK

A farmer goes out one day and buys a brand new stud rooster for his chicken coop.

The new rooster struts over to the old rooster and says, "OK old guy time for you to retire."

The old rooster replies, "Come on, surely you cannot handle all of

these hens. Look what it has done to me. Can't you just let me have the two old hens over in the corner?"

The young rooster says, "Beat it. You are washed up and I am taking over."

The old rooster says, "I tell you what, young stag. I will race you around the farmhouse. Whoever wins gets the exclusive domain over the entire chicken coop."

The young rooster laughs. "You know you don't stand a chance old man. So, just to be fair I will give you a head start."

The old rooster takes off running. About 15 seconds later the young rooster takes off running after him. They round the front porch of the farmhouse and the young rooster has closed the gap. He is already about 5 inches behind the old rooster and gaining fast.

The farmer, meanwhile, is sitting in his usual spot on the front porch when he sees the roosters running by. He grabs his shotgun and - BOOM - He blows the young rooster to bits.

The farmer sadly shakes his head and says, "Dammit... third gay rooster I bought this month."

For many gamefowl breeders and cockers, winning the Annual Candelaria Derby in Iloilo has been a lifelong dream. The event which is held every last week of January or first week of February is regarded to be in the same level as the World Slasher Cup when it comes to grandeur, toughness of competition, prestige and the list of cocking personalities from here and abroad that take part in it.

While, it is almost highly improbable from some to win a Candelaria championship trophy, Johnny Jalandoni did it twice.

It was in 2001 when Jalandoni grabbed his first Candelaria sharing it with thre other top scorers. Then, after just seven years, he did it again, this time in solo fashion.

The last Candelaria 7-Cock Derby registered 168 entries, the biggest ever which makes Johnny’s victory doubly significant.

The repeat triumph would not be possible without the contribution of Lando Layson and the lucky charm of Layson’s friend Heidi from whom their winning entry name Panga was dedicated.

Panga virtually passed through the eye of a needle with the tough opponents it was matched with, on its way to making cockfighting history.

The first match was against Mario Siochi, the second versus Pol Dominguez, while in the other fights his birds were pitted to the roosters of Gov. Joel Reyes of Palawan, Dr. Orduyo and Boy Ledesma.

BLOODLINE

Johnny’s Lemon, Kelso, Hatch, Roudhead and Butcher lines are proven in producing the winning crosses that have brought him numerous championships such as his solo conquest of the Panay Gamefowl Breeders Association’s 7-Stag Derby some 4 or 5 years ago.

In his first fight, he fought a Grey cock, while in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th he fielded full brothers, the cousins of them in the remaining matches.


FRIENDS ALONG THE WAY

“Of course I would like to think my uncle Nonoy Jalandoni who set me off to breeding at the start and Gov. D. O. Plaza who generously provided me breeding stocks after he notice that I have to infuse new lines to make my birds taller”, Johnny revealed.

“Saito (Japanese Ryoichi Saito) was for a long time a good friend and a loyal customer, while Jun Santiago have always helped him every time he would fight in Manila and has given him ample exposure in Metro Manila pits.

SIMPLE AND MODEST

Despite the victories, Johnny has remained modest and down-to-earth. He credits his farm manager Felipe, who has loyally stayed in his farm in Bgy. Tuburan, Bago City for the past 34 years and helped him raised the fine roosters that have given satisfaction to his customers.

THE FUTURE

“I would like to win a World Slasher Cup, but, maybe it had to wait because my priority now is to defend my Candelaria title”, Johnny announced.



NOTE : Johnny almost did it again last January 2009, but fell just a half point short of winning his third Candelaria.

After the roster of finalists got completed last night, the stage is all set for tomorrow’s much-awaited championship of the record-breaking 2009 World Slasher Cup 8-Cock Invitational Derby that registered a total of 207 entries – the biggest ever.

CASINO? MAGSABONG KA NA LANG

Makailang ulit nang naisulat ang tungkol sa mga mala-kumunoy na mga casino dito sa ating bansa na lumamon, umagaw at nagpahirap sa marami-rami na rin na mga magagaling na sabungero. Pero, ika nga, ang paalala ay gamot sa taong nakakalimot kaya muli’t muli ay sinasabi natin. Lumayo kayo sa mga casino.

Nakakalungkot din isipin na ang mga halimaw na mga casino na nagkalat na ngayon sa ating bansa ay pinipilit pang pasukin ang mga sabungan at kaladkarin ang mga sabungero upang hubaran ng kayamanan at karangalan sa kanilang mga lungga kung saan di na mabilang na mga nilalang ang di na nakabangon sa pagkakasadlak sa kahibangan.

Talaga bang kulang pa ang kinikita ng mga casino kaya’t pati ang mga sabungero ay patuloy nilang inaakit at ginagahasa. Bawat isa ay inalagaan, pinalaki, hinubog, sinanay at ikinundisyon upang maghatid ng tagumpay para sa kanyang amo. Dalawang manok na maglalaban gamit ang kanilang angking lakas, bilis, galing at tapang na hindi kontrolado ng tao , katulad ng karera ng kabayo at iba pang sugal. Sa pagitan ng magkatunggali ay narron lamang ang isang sentenciador na siyang magpapatupad ng mga batas at panuntunan sa harap ng daan-daan mata at panuri ng mga opisyanadong matamang nagbabantay.

Kung ihahambing sa sabong, ang sugal sa casino ay maihahantulad sa tahasang panghohold-up.

Kaya, muli’t muli, sinasabi ko sa inyo, ‘wag n’yo nang subukan ang casino. Parang shabu din ‘yan, sa una ay tikim lang hangggang sa malulong ka at di na makabangon pang muli.

Napakasarap ng sabong, bakit magka-casino ka pa? ‘Pag ginawa mo ‘yan bobo ka, kaibigan.

BATAS PARA SA SABONG

Ang Animal Welfare Act na nagpo-protekta sa mga hayop tulad ng aso, pusa, ibon, at maging ahas at iba pang mga reptiles ay naisabatas sa ilalim ng ating mga ilong. Ang batas na ito ay masusing isinulat sa paraang binanggit ang dog-fighting at horse-fighting, ngunit ang kilala at laganap na cockfighting (sabong) ay iniwasang masambit. Bakit? Dahil, marahil, ang mga pwersang laban sa cockfighting tulad ng Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (HSPCA) ay kumbinsidong hindi pa hinog ang panahon para sagupain nila ang Filipino cockers at ang mayabong na industriya ng gamefowl breeding.

Oo, ang Animal Welfare Act ay nakapwesto na mahigit dalawang taon na ang nakalilipas. Mabuti naman. Subalit, kung ating lilimiin sa isipan ang mga aspeto na nagdala sa paglikha at paghahanda ng nasabing batas at ikukumpara ito sa isang bagay, tayo ay mababahala sa maraming hindi kaaya-ayang konklusyon.

Alam na natin ang malaking pinansyal na kakayahan ng mga anti-cockfigthing forces at sila ay gumagasta ng milyones na lobby money na siya namang sumpa ng American cockers dahil wala silang resources upang kahit papaano ay tuligsain ang hataw ng kalaban sa isang patas na paraan. Sila ay hindi naman kapos sa bilang, ngunit sila ay siguradong kapos sa bala, kumbaga.

Ang Animal Welfare Act ay batas na sa ating bansa matapos lamang ang kumulang 10 taong puspusang kampanya ng HSPCA. Ang pagkain ng karne ng aso bilang pulutan ay higit na nabawasan dahil sa media education. It ay isang magandang pagsulong, gayong, marapat lamang na payagan natin ang ating mga cultural minorities sa mga bulubunduking lalawigan na ipagpatuloy ang kaugalian ng pagkain ng karne ng aso na kung saan ito ay pinaniniwalaan nilang may medicinal values at nakakatulong sa kanilang katawan upang labanan ang malamig na klima sa bundok.

Ang mga galaw ng HSPCA ay mabagal, ngunit tumpak at kalkulado. Habang sila ay gumagasta ng pisong milyones para sa kampanya sa media, pinangangalagaan din naman nila ang kanilang mga tagumpay at sinisigurong hindi mabawi ang mga teritoryong kanilang napanalo sa pamamagitan ng pagbabantay ng mga batas na panig sa kanila at ayon na rin sa kanilang mga plano at hangarin.

Para sa HSPCA at ang iba pang pwersa laban sa cockfighting, ang oras ng pagtatanim ay matagal ng nasimulan ngunit nananatili pa ring mataas na prayoridad hanggang sa kasalukuyan. Ang oras ng pag-ani ay nagsimula na at sinisimulan na nilang pulutin ang mga prutas. Ang Animal Welfare Act ay isang malaking tagumpay para sa HSPCA, ngunit ang pagsakop ay nag-uumpisa pa lamang. Siyempre, ang kanilang pinaka hanganrin ay ang tuluyang puksain ang kaugalian na sabong sa Pilipinas tulad ng kanilang nakamit sa Estados Unidos.

Karamihan sa ating mga sabungerong Pinoy ay magsasabing, “Hindi sila magtatagumpay dito.” Maaari, maaaring tama sila, ngunit kung iko-konsidera natin natin ang naging tagumpay nila sa Amerika, marahil tayo ay huminto muna sandali at suriin ang kasaysayan. Noong kasagsagan ng sabong sa Amerika, ang mga tandang ay inilalaban sa White House upang aliwin ang mga panauhing pang-estado. Ang mga founding fathers na sina George Washington, John Adams, at Abe Lincoln ay mga aktibong sabungero. Ang mga malalaking derbies ay ginaganap sa Madison Square Garden. Kaya naman, ang sabong ba ay mas kilala sa Pilipinas o ang laro ay mas tanggap sa Estados Unidos? Ikaw na ang humusga.

Bago tayo maging isa ring Amerika sa proseso, na kung saan ang kalayaan ay inabuso ng isang grupo ng tao upang pigilan ang ibang grupo ng tao mula sa pag-e-enjoy ng kanilang kalayaan, dapat tayong kumilos ngayon upang unahang pigilan at pahintuin sila sa kanilang pagragasa.

Alam ng HSPCA na ang batas ay mabisa nilang sandata. Kung gayun, marapat lamang na naisin nating magpasa ng batas na mangangalaga, magpapatuloy na sususog ng ganitong gawain, at higit sa lahat ay magpapa-unlad ng industriya ng gamefowl breeding at sabong sa buong bansa.

Isang batas na magde-deklara na ang sabong ay isang unique cultural heritage ng mga Filipino ang dapat na maipasa, kasama ang lahat ng mga protective clauses na sisigurong matapos ang Cockfights Protection Law ay mapirmahan, na wala ng ibang batas ang isusulong laban dito. Maari nating sabihin na ang sabong sa Pilipinas ay hindi makakanti sapgkat mayroon tayong malaking bilang ng mga opisyal ng pamahalaan, political leaders, at siyempre mambabatas na kasali sa cocking community. Ito ay nakapagpapalakas ng loob, ngunit tanging batas lang na magde-deklara na ang cockfighting o sabong bilang laro o bahagi ng kultura ang maaaring makapagpanatag ng ating isip.
