Ang 2011 BGT CUP 6-stag derby series ay gaganapin mula Setyembre 17 hanggang Nobyembre 26 sa pitong sabungan sa Leyte at Samar handog ni Bernie G. Tacoy at ng BGT Promotions sa pagtataguyod ng Thunderbird Power Feeds at pakikipagtulungan ni Lando Luzong.

Nagsimula noong isang taon kung saan mahigit sa 200 breeder ang lumahok, amg 2001 BGT CUP naman ay inaasahan na magiging mas malaki at mas magaling lalo na sa nakatayang P1,000,000 para sa entry fee na P6,600. Ang minimum bet ay P3,300, samantalang ang maximum even bet ay P11,000.

Unleashing his feared JVG Gilmore-Roundhead aces, Gegato's BG HIGH MOUNTAIN entry (in partnership with Engr. Gaspar) ruled over entries Yanyan of E. Buenafe;  AMU; HGS of Hermie Saayso; JJ Guide and house bet Jokers Wild. The victory came as a big surprise considering the birds came all the way from Bacolod, arriving in Manila on Thursday morning and then brought to Pangasinan at 11:00 p.m. for a 4-hour trip to Pangasinan.

Six months of waiting ends today as the 2010 BGT CUP Stag Derby Series begins at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon at the Valencia Sports Arena in Bgy. Valencia, Ormoc City with the first of four 3-stag and one 4-stag events lined up between up and coming gamefowl breeders of neighbor provinces Leyte and Samar.

Set to compete today are 50 raring gamefowl raisers excited to test their new breeds of roosters.

Hosted by Bernie G. Tacoy and assited by Rolando Luzong, BGT CUP, which enjoys the full support of Thunderbird Power Feeds means Backyard-breeders Gamefowl Testing & Competitiveness Uprgrade Program aimed to train and encourage young or new gamefowl breeders in the field of stag fighting.

Stags that can be fielded are only those that bear the BGT CUP wingbands which were tagged to qualified cockerels during the month-long screening held last March.

To follow tonight’s scuffle are three succeeding 3-stag derbies on September 22 at the Gallera Burauen,   Burauen, Leyte; on October at the Catarman Cockpit, Catarman, Northern Samar and in October 23 at the Felix Babalcon Square Garden, Paranas, Western Samar.

 

All participants will receive a gift pack from Thunderbird upon payment of entry fee. All champions will receive a trophy, a pullet from BGT Ormoc Gold Game Farm and a surprise gift pack from Thunderbird. 15 pullets from BGT Ormoc Gold GameFarm will be raffled every derby, for all entries entries who will follow the his scheduled fight sequence.

The BGT CUP Breeder of the Year will be decided with the ultimate face-off, a 4-stag derby at the Gallera Burauen, Buraen, Leyte on Oct. 30 with a guaranteed cash prize of P200,000  for an entry fee of P4,500 and minimum bet of P4,400

Entry/ies with highest overall score (3-stag & 4-stag) using the same entry name shall be declared BGT CUP BREEDER OF THE YEAR. SABONG BROTHERHOOD

There are fraternities, clubs, Rotaries, Lions, Masons, Jaycees, Knights of Columbus and so on and so forth. These are formally organized groups in which members are bound together either by their belief, their objectives or their mission or simply because of mutual understanding and cooperation.
In sabong, there are no initiations; no membership; no fees; no restrictions; no written code except the fact that a sabungero should be a gentleman that honours his commitments and obligations. He should maintain fairness and cheating as well as not paying a bet is a mortal sin.

However, despite the informality and loose set-up, sabungeros is strongly bound by their passion…cockfighting.
Cockers would readily support a candidate who “belongs” or who is an insider, without reservation. Sabungeros unconsciously make themselves members of a community and would usually vote as one for one of their own. Maybe, this was the reason why many sectors or individuals immediately growled in protest when we filed our application for the Alyansa Sabungero party list. They are afraid because they know that a party list of and for the sabungero would easiy gather enough votes to be entitled to three congressional seats.
The solid sabungero vote is the reason why a big majority of elected local leaders are cockers or gamefowl breeders, like Mayor Bobby Clemente of Paoay and Mayor Nalupta of Batac in Ilocos Norte; Mayor Jesry Palmares of Passi City; Mayor Cito Albereto of Virac, Catanduanes; Gov. Rio Salceda of Albay; Cong. Tony Kho of Masbate; Gov. Manny Piñol of North Cotabato; Gov. Chungkee Uy of Compostella Valley; Cong. Claude Bautista of Davao; Vice Gov. Odie Fausto of Cagayan; Cong. Baham Mitra of Palawan (running for Governor); former Cong. Rudy Albano of Isabela; Sec. Ronnie Puno of DILG et al.
In fact, some non-cocker politicians entered the Sport to be able to woo in the cockers’ vote.
In the coming local and national elections, hundreds of candidates for local position and several national candidates are already assured of the patronage of sabungeros who numbers in the millions. The old Mitra, never denied or hid his passion for sabong just to advance his political career. Instead, he openly displayed his love for cockfighting even during the time that he was running for the presidency. His pride for sabong is very obvious in campaign slogans such as Mitra, manok ng masa or Mitra ang Matibay.

Cock’s are well-disciplined lot, observing good and right conduct in the following manner :
Barring accidents, they do not peck at each other’s eyes even if they keep on fighting the whole day. This is sportsmanship on the part of the cocks. What about men?

All birds sleep early at sundown but get easily awaken by the slightest noise, movement or sight. They comply to a strict discipline; so don’t disturb your ace fighter at night when preparing for an important fight.

There were 192 and then there were only 3.

Coming from three different cities, Bexan Warriors Dr. Ruel Manungas of Tagum in Davao Del Norte; James Ang from Cebu and highly-respected Congressman Dodong Codilla of Ormoc all scored six perfect wins to dominate the 192-entry P8 million 2010 Araw ng Dabaw Annual 6-Cock Derby.

The 4-day event hosted by Sammy Uy and Dorie, sponsored by Thunderbird is regarded as the biggest and most prestigious cockfighting event in Mindanao and is participated by the biggest names in Philippine cockfighting.

Cong. Codilla – the first to emerge victorious proudly reported that the birds he fought composed of Sweater crossers, Ormoc Gold and Bulik are breeding of his son Winnie.

Thunderbird Winning Team member and Ormoc Gold Breeder Bernie Tacoy who was also competing in the said derby who suffered an upset in his 4^th fight that gave him his only loss, was given the honor to award the trophy to his godfather and mentor Cong. Dodong Codilla (Golden Yakal).

The second 6-0 win-loss slater was Cebuano cocker James Ang – a good friend of Inilog (Tukaan) host Doc Hanzie Dal – himself a multi-awarded breeder.

Completing the grand slam for the Thunderbird Bexan Warriors is Dr, Ruel Manungas of Tagum who fought Kelso-Roundhead & Kelso-Sweater crosses.

In an interview over Sabong TV, he was asked why the name of his entry is B-Warriors. “It’s because of 5 Bs. My children Beatriz, Bridgette, Bernadette and Benjamin” , he said. “And of course, Bexan”, he added.

Dr. Ruel Manungas, a dentist, bred and trained his roosters with assistants Ivan & Rudy and with the expert knife-tying of gaffers Joy Lopez & Dodong.

STAPLER MATCHING GETS JOB DONE IN SAMAR

The style may be confusing to me who has seen it for the first time, but the derby matching process practiced in Samar, particularly at the Paranas Cockpit by matchmakers Ocar Garcia and Benie Alegro, is enough to get the job done.

The idea is, like in a 3-cock derby such as the one I witnessed hosted by Bernie Tacoy last Saturday - January 30, to list in cards the weights submitted by the participants. One card for each weight that should also bear the entry number ; entry name; entry owner; no-fight requests; amount of bets; fight schedule preference etc.

After all the entries have registered and all the roosters’ weights are entered, a wide pad of acetate, like the material used in construction plans, equally divided into rectangles with bold prints of particular weight brackets like 2010; 1980; 2400; 2500 etc. which is actually weight in kilos.

Each and every weight card is placed on their proper weight rectangles on the acetate. Then, the grouped weight cards are retrieved set by set and are spread out on the table. Each card will then be found his match from among the rest of the cards.

When two weight cards are found to be the best match, the two weight cards are then stapled together. The process goes on until all the weight cards are matched.

This will be followed by the sequencing process, wherein they will go through the all the matched-weight cards and one by one assigned a fight number to it.

The birds were matched, the fights were scheduled and the derby was staged.

However, the glitz I mentioned before the matching even began happened. There was a moment when there were only two weight cards for one of the entries, so a card was missing. They had to count and look and go through each card again.

There was a moment during sequencing that the number of fights were one less that they should be.

There was also an incident when one of the participants, upon reaching the pit and weighing his birds in the official scale, found out that his personal scale is 15 grams over than the official scale, so he requested that the weights he submitted should be changed to 15 grams lower. It had to be done, so the cards had to be shuffled and reshuffled again.

According to Botoy (llamador) he brought in the system from Bicol when he attended a derby at Legazpi, Albay once.

I personally would like to than the cockers of Samar for the very warm welcome and accommodation. Mabuhay po kayo.

I am writing this article in an internet shop somewhere in Ormoc City and I am currently wrestling with sleepiness so I can finish this article and be able to email it to my editor just before we hit the road again for a 4-hour trip to Catbalogan, Samar where another derby is set today, January 30, hosted by my good friend Bernie Tacoy (www.ormocgold.com) – breeder of the Ormoc Gold and one of Thunderbird’s latest addition to its fleet of endorsers who are respected cockfighters in their own rights.

Who won’t get sleepy like me after having treated myself to a bowl of PACDOL – the local bulalo and a plate of BALBACUA – an asado-like dish that is perked up with sweat-inducing siling labuyo. Doro’s Carenderia, where I ate also serves PINAWIKAN & PACLAY, which are, like PACDOL & BALBACUA are diifferent ways of cooking carabao (kabaw) meat. Also avalivale is CALDERITAS which is goat meat cooked in sauce and also the SINAJE which is pork intestine made brown and crispy.

It’s probably my seventh-time to set foot in Ormoc and it is slowly becoming a second home for me.

Last Wednesday, Bernie hosted a 3-cock derby in Buraen Amusement Center in the Buraen, Leyte – which is apparently the biggest producer of copra in the whole province and in the middle of my conversation with the good vice mayor, I have suggested a Burauen Copra Festival just like the Lansones Festival in Camiguin. In Buraen is where I saw the biggest number of parked motorcycles in my whole life. There’s thousand of them, all owned by the derby fans.

The January 27^th Buraen fight was a day to cherished. We were already at the pit and enjoying the fights when some of the foreign participants to the just-concluded 2010 World Slasher Cup arrived and the first one to notice me who immediately gave me a big hug was Mexican-American Speedy Gonzales - a six-footer former athlete who acquired the name Speedy because he was a fast runner and football player years ago. With him were Brad Padgeth of Oregon, Bob Ray from Vallejo, California, Clive Amos from England and Australian Glenn Nonnemacher. Despite coming from different countries they are bounded by their deep love and passion for sabong.

I had them acknowledged and introduced to the crowd by the Pit Manager, after which, Speedy gave a response on behalf of his colleagues. He said, in broken English and Tagalog “Maraming salamat pow. You must know how lucky you are, because you can sabong anytime and anywhere without fear of being arrested by the police. I would like to let you know that we are now treated like criminals in our country because we allowed the animal rights activist like the PETA to sow intrigue and misinformation about sabong. Do not allow that to happen in the Pilipinas, fight them. Also, see to it that you elect people who are sabungeros or is a supporter of sabong. Also, teach your children about sabong. Give the young boys roosters so that they will know how to take care of them and so that they will not believe the bad things that the animal rights activists are saying about sabong.” This was greeted with a thunderous applause by the crowd.

A Project for the Backyard Breeder in Waray Country

My main reason for coming to Wary country was to implement a project that I and Bernie have of for the backyard-breeders of Waray land. The said project is called BGT Cup (Backyard-Breeders Gamefowl Testing – Competitiveness Upgrade Program) and is aimed to provie comprehensive training and a springboard competition for backyard breeders of the provinces of Samar & Leyte, in preparation to competing in the big leagues such as Bakbakan, Heritage Cup or Rambulan.

The program is for backyard gamefowl breeders of Leyte & Samar, particularly new breeders who have not tried competing in a derby. They should not be a member of any association affiliated with the National Federation of Gamefowl Breeders or the United Gamecock Breeders Association.. Thru seminars, flyers or DVD, backyard breeders will be educated and trained in the basics of stag derby fighting which will include stag selection, preconditioning, conditioning, pointing and the process by which a stag derby is done (submission, matching, sequencing etc).

A wingbanding of cockerels in Leyte & Samar will be implemented on the month of March. To qualify for wingbanding, a backyard breeder should have attended a Derby Orientation & Opposition Readiness Seminar (DOORS)

The two (2) BGT-CUP derbies will be: a) a 3-Stag Derby on the 3^rd week of August and a 4-Stag Derby on the 4^th week of August.

The 3-Stag Derby will require an entry fee of P2,200 plus empty packs of Thunderbird Power Feeds & Thunderbird Power Vet. All participants will receive free gift packs from Thunderbird. Winners can win as much as P100,000 cash prize plus trophy and jacket for the champion. Minimum bet P2,200.

All participants who will compete in both events will automatically receive a free quality young brood pullet from BGT Game Farm.

All who will participate in both events will be qualified for the BGT-CUP Breeder of the Year in their locality (Ex. – BGT-CUP Leyte-Samar Breeder of the Year) based on the total points scored in the two derbies. The local Breeder of the Year will receive a special trophy and a BGT CUP Breeder of the Year jacket and P30,000-worth of Thunderbird Power Feeds & Thunderbird Power Vet products plus a young quality Ormoc Gold trio (1 broodcock & 2 broodhens) from Bernie G. Tacoy of BGT Game Farm.

After the derby tomorrow, I’ll be flying to Iloilo for the Candelaria where my good friend Yuac Estrella is fighting.

A TOUCH OF GOLD

Husband and wife Bernie & Belen Tacoy and their three children used to live inside a gamefowl barn. An attic of sort above their head composed of four slabs of plywood hanging from the nipa roof served as their bedroom. Bernie who earned his living then by being a cockfights handler and gaffer could hardly make ends meet. Until lady luck appeared to him and changed their lives to something they had never even dreamed of.


TWIST OF LUCK

Bernie Tacoy has been into gamefowl breeding since he was a teenager, but it was not until five years ago when he hit the jackpot, in the same manner that Boy Primalion did. Primalion, as every Filipino cocker knows, is the breeder of the Zamboanga Whites – a strain of fightingcocks that dominated the competition for almost eight years during the 80s up to the early 90s.

Five years ago, a guy gifted Bernie’s uncle with a gold-colored hen. However, his uncle not being fond of off-colored gamebirds was not interested and did not bother to breed the hen and left the poor bird in a corner pen.

Tacoy probably saw something in the golden hen that he asked his uncle’s permission for him to breed it. His uncle agreed, so Bernie got a broodcock to pair with the gold hen. From then on, what followed was a strain of gamefowl that Tacoy has never imagined he will have. It was like hitting a gold mine.

Out of the first batch of fourteen roosters he was able to produce from the gold hen, 13 won. From then on, there was no turning back for Bernie. Convinced that he had chanced upon the elusive nick or cut that other breeders spend years looking for, Tacoy did what was necessary to preserve the strain that he discovered.

The strain that Bernie developed is so versatile that he is able to cross it with other bloodlines he would prefer, but the gold color and its fighting qualities are always retained coupled with the qualities that he wanted from the line he chose to infuse.


One of the fast rising stars in Philippine cockfighting as a promisng gamefowl breeder comes from Ormoc City. His name is Bernie Tacoy and if he continuously able to sustain his success, he may yet write the same story that the great Boy Primalion did with his Zamboanga Whites for the City of Zamboanga.

Nowadays, the Ormoc Gold strain of rooster that Tacoy mustered has been making waves in Leyte and neighboring provinces. The Midas touch that the Ormoc Gold brought to the Tacoy family has practically changed their lives.

The barn wherein Bernie and his wife Belen used to live is now a two storey concrete house with furniture, appliances and air-conditioners; the farm which they use to rent is now their own, not to mention the sugar cane and pineapple plantations they were able to acquire thru their sales and winnings form the Ormoc Golds.

Tacoy admits that the Ormoc Gold is God’s blessing, because the nick that other breeders takes years to find, that is if they are lucky enough to find it, was handed to him in a silver…or a golden platter.

I saw how the Ormoc Golds spar and I bet they are bound to write their own epic in the years to come. Watch out!
