SABONG BROTHERHOOD

CARREO by Rolando S. Luzong

Peoples Tonight (April 17, 2010)

SABONG BROTHERHOOD

There are fraternities, clubs, Rotaries, Lions, Masons, Jaycees, Knights of Columbus and so on and so forth. These are formally organized groups in which members are bound together either by their belief, their objectives or their mission or simply because of mutual understanding and cooperation.
In sabong, there are no initiations; no membership; no fees; no restrictions; no written code except the fact that a sabungero should be a gentleman that honours his commitments and obligations. He should maintain fairness and cheating as well as not paying a bet is a mortal sin.

However, despite the informality and loose set-up, sabungeros is strongly bound by their passion…cockfighting.
Cockers would readily support a candidate who “belongs” or who is an insider, without reservation. Sabungeros unconsciously make themselves members of a community and would usually vote as one for one of their own. Maybe, this was the reason why many sectors or individuals immediately growled in protest when we filed our application for the Alyansa Sabungero party list. They are afraid because they know that a party list of and for the sabungero would easiy gather enough votes to be entitled to three congressional seats.
The solid sabungero vote is the reason why a big majority of elected local leaders are cockers or gamefowl breeders, like Mayor Bobby Clemente of Paoay and Mayor Nalupta of Batac in Ilocos Norte; Mayor Jesry Palmares of Passi City; Mayor Cito Albereto of Virac, Catanduanes; Gov. Rio Salceda of Albay; Cong. Tony Kho of Masbate; Gov. Manny Piñol of North Cotabato; Gov. Chungkee Uy of Compostella Valley; Cong. Claude Bautista of Davao; Vice Gov. Odie Fausto of Cagayan; Cong. Baham Mitra of Palawan (running for Governor); former Cong. Rudy Albano of Isabela; Sec. Ronnie Puno of DILG et al.
In fact, some non-cocker politicians entered the Sport to be able to woo in the cockers’ vote.
In the coming local and national elections, hundreds of candidates for local position and several national candidates are already assured of the patronage of sabungeros who numbers in the millions. With due advantage are senatorial candidates Ramon Mitra – son of the late House Speaker Monching Mitra who is regarded as one of the greatest Filipino cockers that ever lived. The name Mitra is simply synonymous to sabong. When a sabungero hear the name Mitra, instantly what comes to mind are the phenomenal Mitra 56 or the Mitra Blues or the parawakans, gamefowl strains who despite their lack in beauty are regarded as among the Royal Bloods of Philippine cockfighting.
Ramon Mitra III or simply Monmon, including his brother Baham were immersed in their father’s love for the fightingcock, from childhood. The old Mitra, never denied or hid his passion for sabong just to advance his political career. Instead, he openly displayed his love for cockfighting even during the time that he was running for the presidency. His pride for sabong is very obvious in campaign slogans such as Mitra, manok ng masa or Mitra ang Matibay.

“ A cock’s code of conduct”
Cock’s are well-disciplined lot, observing good and right conduct in the following manner :
Barring accidents, they do not peck at each other’s eyes even if they keep on fighting the whole day. This is sportsmanship on the part of the cocks. What about men?
A cock will never hit while the opponent is in the process of moving his bowels. Try to verify this fact
A cock will not relieve itself while being held in hand but the moment he is set down the ground he will do so at once. Good etiquette. After one or two hours of traveling, put him down in the ground and in a minute he will move his bowels and flap his wings for the needed relief and rest.
At the sight of the morsel of food or any kind of insect, he will call for the opposite sex to share it with her. Noble breed and gallantry. Men do this, too.
Birds communicate to each other any impending trouble and danger by a loud cackle and this signal is relayed to all of their kind in far surrounding places, in a natural spirit of mutual cooperation.
All birds sleep early at sundown but get easily awaken by the slightest noise, movement or sight. They comply to a strict discipline; so don’t disturb your ace fighter at night when preparing for an important fight.

WORST INSULT TO A GAMEFOWL BREEDER

CARREO by Rolando S. Luzong

Peoples Tonight (January 9, 2010)

WORST INSULT TO A GAMEFOWL BREEDER

What’s the worst insult that can happen to a gamefowl breeder?

Immediately, you will say to yourself or to the person next to you reading this article, “Of course, if his rooster runs in the middle of a fight”. Well, that’s a blessing compared to what Joe Laureño of Murcia, Negros Oriental told me.

A friend of Joe who is also a breeder had his roosters stolen. If I remember it right, he said ten birds were taken by the thieves.

After a week, Joe visited his friend in his farm. It was evening and they were having some beers and were talking about breeding and the thievery for some time when there was a “Blaagghh” at the backside of the farm. Then, there was a shout that went “Manok mo bulok, ayusin mo breeding mo”.

When they went investigate, they found a jute sack with six live roosters. Apparently, the robbers fought the stolen roosters and lost five times.

The name of Joe’s friend has been withheld to not cause additional insult.

Lesson : If you breed, breed well…

This one is a true story, but I bet you had a good laugh.

THUNDERBIRD NEW PLANT

IN CEBU WILL ANSWER

VIS-MIN’S GROWING DEMAND FOR THUNDERBIRD’S WINNING FORMULA

With the scheduled opening of the new UNAHCO-Thunderbird Power Feeds plant in Naga, Cebu in the first quarter of 2010, the continuously growing number of gamefowl breeders in the Visayas and Mindanao will be assured of unhampered supply of quality nutrition for their birds.

Visayas and Mindanao has moved by leaps and bounds in their gamefowl breeder population and this is proven by the fact that there are now a lot of breeders’ groups in the area.

From just one association before which is the Mindanao Gamefowl Breeders Association (MIGBA) now there are also the Northern Mindanao Gamefowl Breeders Ass’n (NMGBA); Zamboanga Gamefowl Breeders Association (ZGBA); the Zamboanga del Norte Gamefowl Breeders Association (ZNGBA) and the Socsksargen Gamefowl Breeders Association (SGBA).

In the Visayas, before there were only the Negros Gamefowl Breeders Association (NGBA) and the Gamefowl Breeders Association of Negros (GFBAN), but we now have the Gamefowl Breeders Association of Negros Occidental (GBANO), the Eastern Visayas Gamefowl Breeders Association (EVGBA); the Cebu Gamefowl Breeders Association (CEGBA) and the the Central Visayas Breeders Association (CVBA).

The new plant is a modern facility that employs the latest in European technology in the production of quality feeds.

ATONG IS BACK

I was watching Sultada some few nights ago and I was surprised to when I heard Boy Diaz said, “Okay our next fight is between Charlie Ang and…”. I looked at the monitor and yes it was Atong Ang, in shorts releasing a rooster.

Then I said to myself, “Oh it’s probably a rerun. A replay of old fights”. However, I noticed after about five fights, there was that NELBA entry of Engr. Moises Aluete and Cong. Lawrence Wacnang which bagged the championship in the United Gamecock Breeders Associaton’s Big Event 1-Day 8-Stag Derby at the Makati Coliseum. It was then that I was sure that what I was watching was newly tape-recorded derby.

So folks, Charlie “Atong” Ang proved to be a true-cocker after all who just can’t resist his passion for fightingcocks.

Welcome back Sir Atong.

HAPPY WEDDING ANNIVERSARY to Engr. & Mrs. Ted Pachecho (TRISEVEN) tomorrow. May you have a hundred more anniversaries to come.

Filipinos welcome New Year's Day with positive attitude, hope for peace and prosperity
By
Dec 31, 2009 - 2:18:50 PM

MANILA, Dec. 31 (PNA Features) –- Millions of Filipinos celebrate New Year’s Day on Friday, January 1, like one big happy family with positive attitude and hope for peace and prosperity amid the trying times.

On New Year's Eve, many Filipino families hold reunions to further strengthen the bond that they share with loved ones and friends as they part with 2009 and welcome the New Year.

Monsignor Romulo Rañada of the Our Lady of the Annunciation Parish (OLAP) Church in Barangay Tandang Sora, Novaliches, Quezon City, said most Filipino families are expected to troop to Churches on Friday, which happens to be the First Friday of 2010.

Rañada said the family members will hear mass and offer prayers as a way of thanking God for the blessings they received in the past year and hope to receive in the New Year.

In the evening of the last day of the outgoing year, people usually light fireworks, loud firecrackers are heard, booming sound system reverberate in some neighborhood, bamboo canons are fired to produce a lot of noises, with the belief that such noises would scare evil spirits away and prevent them from bringing bad luck during the coming New Year.

Coins are also jumbled in tin cans, also to make noise with the belief that this will bring more money to the revelers.

Children are encouraged to jump about as there is an old belief that this would ensure good height for the kids.

Some people wear clothing with polka dots, the round figures symbolizing fertility and abundance (as in round fruits and coins).

Cockfighting enthusiast Rolando Luzong said the 2010 Chinese New Year begins on February 14, 2010 and will end on February 2, 2011.

On the modern Gregorian calendar, New Year's Day is celebrated on January 1, as it was also in ancient Rome (though other dates were also used in Rome).

In all countries using the Gregorian calendar as their main calendar, except for Israel, it is a public holiday, often celebrated with fireworks at the stroke of midnight as the New Year starts.

January 1 on the Julian calendar corresponds to January 14 on the Gregorian calendar, and it is on that date that followers of some of the Eastern Orthodox churches celebrate the New Year. (PNA Features)

Animal rights issue stalks cockfight industry

December 28, 2009 11:31 pm

MANILA, Dec. 28 – Animal rights issue is hounding the country’s cockfighting industry.

“Cockfighting is here to stay. It has been part of the Philippine culture no matter what it takes, just like Spain’s bullfighting,” said gamefowl breeder Rolando Luzong, a member of Cockpit Watch.

He said bullfighting is a traditional spectacle of Spain and Portugal. And in some cities in southern France, several Latin American countries and in Artvin, Turkey one or more bulls are ritually killed in a bullring as a public spectacle.

Novelist Nid Anima of Novaliches, Quezon City said cockfighting should be treated as a national treasure, national identity.

“It’s one with culture,” he said, adding that roosters are wild in nature. "They always fight even if not provoked." Anima is a member of Alyansa Sabungero.

Female cockfight aficionado Princess Naldo said a cockpit has become a regular fixture in the Philippine countryside and suburban areas.

In some municipalities in the country, a cockpit is situated along with a school, the municipal hall and the church, she said.

According to Naldo, cockfight serves as equalizer between rich and poor. Be they politicians, businessmen, yuppies, laborers and peasants, they enjoy, bet, win, lose and are energized by the euphoria generated by an exciting cockfight

Aware of some foreigners who come to the country and say that "Philippine culture is not right" because of cockfighting, Naldo cited wrestling and mixed martial arts matches in the United States.

Calling these matches "a bloodsport," Naldo said wrestling and mixed martial arts are more violent than cockfighting.

Meanwhile, Alyansa Sabungero, a partylist organization has been formed purportedly to help the marginalized components of Philippine cockfighting and to uplift the gamefowl industry.

Anima said some political figures have made a mockery of their group when they sought accreditation in the Commission on Election (Comelec).

A Comelec commissioner even remarked that "sabungeros" are already well represented in Congress.

Anima bewailed that the public only see the moneyed people in cockfighting.

On the other hand, Cockpit Watch (Bantay Sabong) was organized in 2008 to guard the sport of cockfighting against campaigns being done by animal rights activist.

“Some of them rally everywhere. At first, we were just observing them," said Luzong.

These activists demonstrated in front of the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City in 2008 when the World Slasher Cup was held.

"That was when we finally understood they were out to stop cockfights,” Luzong said.

The anti-cockfight rallies prompted Luzong to organize Bantay Sabong to protect, defend, promote and preserve cockfighting.

While there is no doubt that Alyansa Sabungero is a political aggrupation, Bantay Sabong is a social movement, according to Luzong. But essentially, they fight for the same thing: to promote the continuity of cockfighting.

Luzong said he and Anima have been friends for a long time.

Asked about animal cruelty, Luzong said one cannot classify cockfighting as animal cruelty because it's the roosters' instinct to fight each other.

For his part, Anima said roosters do not have the instinct for blood relations. “Left to themselves, roosters fight because they love and enjoy fighting,” he said. (PNA Features)

Full Speed Ahead in 2010

CARREO by Rolando S. Luzong

Peoples Tonight (January 2, 2010)

Full Speed Ahead in 2010

The bearings are set, all engines are on the maximum, so let’s go…full speed ahead in 2010.

Predictions are the most anticipated things at the start of each year, so I’ll try to give my share.

Roderick C. Meredith, leader of the Living Church of God; Harold Camping, president of Family Radio; Ric Steiner and several other self-proclaimed prophets of doom have predicted that the world will end in 2010. I say to hell with them, because my life has just taken a turn for the better and for me the world is just beginning to bloom.

I am no Jeanne Dixon who predicted the assassination of John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert F. Kennedy. I am also not Jojo Acuin – Philippine’s most credible when it comes to predictions, but, I am Rolando S. Luzong and I think I can predict that 2010 will break all records in the annals of Philippine cockfighting. Watch out for these developments :

1) The World Slasher Cup will have more than 250 entries for the first time eclipsing the 207 entries registered in January 2009.

2) The 2010 Candelaria Derby in Jaro, Iloilo which is the 43rd staging of the annual event that is the biggest in the Vis-Min area will be posting another record in terms of entries, as well as foreign participation.

3) The National Federation of Gamefowl Breeders will have at least four new member associations.

4) Off-color roosters will make their presence felt in the 2010 World Slasher Cup.

5) A Philippine-based American breeder or American with a farm here will win a major derby.

6) Sonny Lagon will win his first World Slasher Cup.

A DAY WITH BOY DIAZ

If you’re a sabungero, you should know Boy Diaz. He’s that kung fu master-looking host of Tukaan – currently the number one sabong tele-magazine show shown every Sunday from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. over IBC-13.

I had a very nice day with him last Wednesday and I was so embarrassed because the day before, as I was talking to him over the phone, he said he just came from Nueva Ecija and it was so hot there and he was not able to reply to my text because he was driving. My first reaction, bad boy me, was ‘Can you still drive?’ He said “Of course”

Yesterday, as we began negotiating the foot trail going into Kuya Boy’s farm from where we parked our vehicle, I began to feel ashamed as I slowly realized that Kuya Boy who looks not that healthy on tv and who is fighting Parkinson’s Disease can manage to go back and forth to his farm twice a week, while me, in my first visit, was already gasping hard and had to stopped several times to catch my breath.

One thing I have proven after talking to Boy Diaz for several hours is that, a viewer must not believe everything he sees on television, particularly with Boy Diaz. What you see is not what you get.

Boy D. as he is fondly called is as strong as a bull and his only problem is movement control, but like Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach, he is fighting back and beating the odds.

Kuya Boy, thank you for a fruitful and revealing chit-chat refreshed with fresh buko juice. And thank you for the McLean broodcock and the Lacy Roundhead hen.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to Pareng Sonny Lagon and Dong Lacson for the New Year eve calls; to Isko Martinez, Albert Uy, Edwin Mapanao & Mr. Ricardo Alba for the opportunities; to Ken Cantero for everything; to my just-married friend James Pope of Mexia, Texas, who I talked with over the phone last Christmas; to Mayor Nene Aguilar who welcome us (Fred Canumay, Willy Villaruz, Francis Ong and me) in his home with the same enthusiasm last Thursday; to Jun Martinez of Plilia Cockpit for the partnership; to Bernie Tacoy of Ormoc for his nice accommodation for me and Francis when we were in Leyte; to my good friend Princess for always being there to lend a hand or a shoulder to lean on; to Dr. Rex Iwuanyanwu for being a friend in the real sense of the word; to my family and to all the friends, as well as all the not-so-friendly who stirred me to proved that I can do better.

SABONG-FRIENDLY CANDIDATES

CARREO by Rolando S. Luzong

Peoples Tonight (December 20, 2009)

SABONG-FRIENDLY CANDIDATES

Election fever is upon us. Again, we will be able to exercise our right in choosing the leaders that will lead us, govern us and will formulate and implement policies that will affect us all.

Us, sabungeros or those in the sabong community should be on the watch for the candidates, local or national, who we can expect will support or will be friendly to cockfighting or will back any movement or effort to stop cockfighting or put it in a bad light.

The first candidates that come to mind are cocker-breeder senatorial candidates Congressman Rodolfo Ompong Plaza and Monmon Mitra who are both sons of Filipino cockers who are regarded as among the pillars of Philippine cockfighting.

The late Congressman Democrito “D O” O. Plaza is credited for bringing into the country several American cocking greats and for years was staging his own international derby promotion in Butuan City. A generous man, DO is known for giving breeding stocks to up and coming breeders to help them improve their lines. As a cocker, he is regarded as a perfectionist which is actually how his son Ompong is, as a cocker-breeder. He would not use a knife (tari) twice that at the time of his death is said to have a drum-full of tari soaked in oil. Like his son

The late Speaker Monching Mitra gave us the phenomenal Mitra fowls. He was the seating Speaker of the House of Representatives when the Omnibus Local Government Code of the Philippines was signed into law, wherein, a very simple provision gave the local government units full authority over sabong which eventually resulted in the huge increase in the number of cockpits nationwide and the tripling of derbies and other cockfighting promotions whole year round.

However, it’s not only the Mitras and the Plazas that have contributed to the status that sabong now enjoys, but there are also the Cojuangcos (Danding and Peping) – uncles of both Noynoy Aquino and Gibo Teodoro.

Even Manny Villar’s heart should not be that far from sabong considering that his late father-in-law is a sabungero. His brother-in-law, in case you don’t know, is highly respected cocker Mayor Nene Aguilar of Las Piñas City who also owns and operates the cockpit in that city.

Former President Joseph Estrada is not known to be a cocker, but is definitely in the company of sabungeros from the time he was mayor of San Juan until he became the country’s most overwhelmingly voted President. Names like Ambet & Georgie Antonio, Atong Ang and of course Chavit Singson had been written or mentioned with the name Erap.

Sen. Richard Gordon is never known to have been a cocker, but his mortal political enemies, the Magsaysays, are. JV Magsaysay who is the President of the Zambales, Batangas & Olongapo Gamefowl Breederrs Association (ZABONG) is the husband of Congresswoman Mitos Magsaysay and the son of former Zambales Governor Vic Magsagysay – himself an avid cockfighter.

Among the Vice Presidential candidates, Mar Roxas is a nephew of World Slasher Cup host and well-respected cocker Jorge “Nene” Araneta, while incumbent Mayor of Makati Jojo Binay used to have a rooster farm in Rosario, Batangas.

Edu Manzano has been seen inside Metro Manila cockpits and has a lot of cocker-friends.

Based on the anti-cockfighting ordinances that Bayani Fernando implemented in Marikina during his stint as Mayor, such as prohibiting the cording of roosters by the roadside and confiscation of roosters along with stray dogs, as well as the closing down of the famous Marikina Valley Cockpit, I don’t see him to be of service to sabong and the sabungeros if he wins.

Worst is, I believe, Sen. Loren Legarda who is not only an environmentalist, but also an animal rights activist. During his broadcasting days in her show Pep Talk, animal protection is among the regular topic.

Let’s choose the right candidate that will serve us. Someone who is equipped with education, knowledge, integrity, willingness to serve and has a proper understanding of Filipino culture and tradition such as sabong.

We don’t need someone like that Governor who ordered that sabong should be staged only during Sundays in his province.

Anyone who is wanting to be our leader, but does not possessed an open-mindedness about sabong as a unique Filipino culture, does not deserve our votes.

INTERNET CHICKEN PEDDLERS

CARREO by Rolando S. Luzong

Peoples Tonight (December 9, 2009)

INTERNET CHICKEN PEDDLERS

If there are any other persons as evil as the perpetrators in the gruesome Maguindanao Massacre, they are the chicken peddlers in the internet because what they do to new, young, innocent and trusting rooster buyers are nothing short of murder.

Imagine posting photos of beautiful roosters or hens that they took from another man’s farm then describing the birds as though they were his own and that they are invincible, that they are good cutters, powerful, high-breakers and so on and so forth; that they have won multiple times already or that they belong to a popular strain of fightingcocks. In fact they are so good in their evil trade that a non-suspecting cocker will be convinced that he is passing a great opportunity if he will not buy the rooster being offered considering the unbelievably low price tag of say, P3,5000 to a picture cock that looks like P8,000 – P10,000.

I have been hearing about these things, but I was not aware of how bad these internet chicken peddlers are, until I talked recently to one of the victims. The young guy who is a singer and stage actor saves his hard-earned money to be able to buy good breeding stocks and his experience with an internet chicken peddler who calls himself “warhorse” is something that is truly condemnable.

In addition to the grave misrepresentation, “warhorse” who seemed to have perfected his game is so sinister that whenever one would contact him to express interest in his merchandise, he would say that he is sorry because he had decided not to sell the rooster anymore and that he will just use bird as a broodcock because he was really so good. That ploy will erase the low price tag of course because the subject rooster is not for sale anymore. However, after a day or two, he will call back the interested buyer and tell him that he is in a cockpit and that he is losing and because he needed money he will just let go of the subject rooster if the money (double the posted price) can be delivered to him right away.

Of course, an innocent buyer, thinking it was the chance of a lifetime will run to deliver the money, upon receiving the payment, “warhorse” will tell his victim to just proceed to his so-so farm and pick-up the rooster from his farmhand because he still has some fights left.

The buyer, thinking he had hit a jackpot, rushes to pick up his broodcock. Excited, he would briefly look at what he purchased then immediately heads home where he will open his computer and compare what he got to what was posted in the internet.

Convinced that he had been duped, he would call “warhorse”, but the peddler will insist that the buyer got the same chicken that was posted in the internet.

I remember now that years ago, a lady cocker already brought to my attention what “warhorse” was doing, but that time she and her group were just suspecting something sinister was going on.

Today, we can just imagine how many had been victimized by “warhorse” since that time, which was at the least five years ago.

With the very strong karma in sabong, I wonder what sort of tragedy will befall this so-called “warhorse” in the future.

TANYAG, ANDAL SHARE

BAKBAKAN 10-STAG DERBY CROWN

After seven weeks of grueling pit battles all over the country that saw 2,417 entries unleashing their latest gamefowl battle-crosses, the 2009 Bakbakan National 10-Stag Derby closed with two Southern Tagalog entries top-scoring with 9 wins and 1 draw each to split the prize purse of P15 million (out of the P30 million guaranteed cash prize) and the honors of being the Philippine best rooster-raisers of the year.

The record-breaking event is presented by the National Federation of Gamefowl Breeders and Thunderbird Ganador Max.

The newest addition in the prestigious list of Bakbakan champions are Boy Tanyag (Red Cobra) who is a member of the young Laguna Gamefowl Breeders Association founded and headed by respected cocker-breeder Sonny Lagon and Ireneo Andal (Igae Bagwis) from the Batangas Breeders Club led by Fred Katigbak.

Championship hopefuls Rene Adao (RDA Farm 2), Kalinga Vice Gov. Joel Baac (JB Patapon), brothers Jo, Jed & Jay Nalupta of UNIGBA and Cagayan Vice Governor Odie Fausto (CVGBA President) all faltered in their last matches as they gunned for their 10th points and a claim to the title.

The grand finals last Thursday proved to a night for the Batanguenos with Rene Adao and another Batangas native Tony Lasala (NML San Luis) finishing with 9 points.
