It’s record-breaking time again as the much-awaited 2011 World Slasher Cup 8-Cock Invitational Derby kicks-off today at the historic Araneta Coliseum with more than 170 entries vying to claim the title of World Champion.

Hosted by the Pintakasi of Champions and presented  by Bmeg Derby Ace with Thunderbird Enertone as major sponsor, this mid-year event is expected to be a toss-up among the solo champions of the last four World Slasher Cup stagings. These are January 2011 champ Patrick Antonio; June 2010 winner Atty. Art de Castro & Eddie Aparri; January 2010 victor Engr. Sonnie Magtibay who bagged the title just 52 days after he won the 2009 Bakbakan 10-Stag National Derby and May 2009 top bet Marcel Julao.

Locking horns today starting at ten in the morning are some 100 competitors belonging to the first batch of entries for their 2-cock eliminations with each other fighting to gain early important points before the semis. The second set of participants tries to outclass each other tomorrow June 7 for their 2-cock preliminaries. The 2-cock semis for Group A is on June 8, while Group B meet on June 9. The 4-cock finals for Group A is on June 11 and the ultimate event is on June 12 for the Group B finalists.

During the last five years, the World Slashers Cup’s number of entries has constantly increased, boosted by the active participation of foreign-based Pinoys and OFW-cockers who, despite their being abroad, have been operating and maintaining their respective gamefowl breeding farms in the Philppines. The January 2009 Slashers edition was actually ruled by three foreign-based Pinoys… Rolly Gabon and his Chicago “gang” (MJRG); Rodel Costalles (Spoiled sa Amo) and  Jorge Torres of California (Cucamonga) . This time, the “balik-sabong Pinoys” are led by Josue Bacolod, Jr.  from Davao who is a contractor in Angola – in partnership with Ormoc Gold breeder Bernie Tacoy.

Among the confirmed foreign participants as of this time are Roger Roberts (Georgia) with Nene Araneta , Ray Alexander (Alabama), Kali Casco (Hawaii), Sedfrey Linsangan (Guam), Jorge “Goy” Goitia (California) with Biboy Enriquez, Zosimo Antivo (Las Vegas), Clarence Perkins (Kentucky) with Mayor Jesry Palamares, Carol Nestmith (Oklahoma) with Francis Lumunsad, Jorge Torres (Califorina), Zaldy Sandoval (California), Tony Ang (Taiwan), Jason Campbell, Bill McNatt, Chris Casilan (Hawaii), Jeff Hudspeth (California), Randy Hall (Texas), Tyrone Kennedy (Alabama), Mike Formosa (Hawaii) with Rey Flores and Gerard Inman with Jimmy Mariquit.

The powerhouse home team boasts of June 2010 Slasher champ Rey Briones of Masbate, Boy Marzo of La Union, Gerry Ramos, Engr. Sonny Lagon of Cebu, Honey Yu of Quezon, Mayor Cito Alberto of Catanduanes, Pol Estrellado of San Pablo City, Engr. Sonnie Magtibay of Palawan, Nene Abello & Raffy Yulo of Bacolod, Benigno “Boy Lechon” de Roca, Cavite Int’l Derby champion Boy Gegato, Mike & Tonton Romulo, Felix Trebol. Cockfighting Fans Flock to Manila to Watch Birds Battle to the Death

On an unusually rainy January evening in Manila, a raucous crowd of about 3,000 at the modern and brightly lit Araneta Coliseum is tense as two fighting cocks prepare to battle inside a dirt pit at the World Slasher Cup.
Hundreds of kristos, or bookmakers, call out and flash hand signals to record the bets of their patrons. A referee removes leather sheaths from the five-centimeter steel blades each bird wears strapped to one leg. Moments later, the cocks fly, kick and slash inflicting deep wounds. In less than a minute, the fight is done.

2ND SENTENCIADOR SEMINAR WORKSHOP
IN DONSOL ON MAY 21

A seminar workshop on cockfights officiating will be held on Saturday, May 21 at the Amelia Resorts in Donsol, Sorsogon presented by the National Federation of Gamefowl Breeders and Thunderbird Enertone – the first ready-mixed maintenance formula, hosted by the Bicol Gamefowl Breeders Association led by its President Bong Gazmen – one of Thunderbird Winning Team members.

This Sentenciador Seminar Workshop in Bicol follows the highly successful first workshop held in Palawan initiated by the Group of Palawan Gamefowl Breeders, Inc.

Again, like in Palawan, the country’s most respected sentenciador Ramon “Berong” Javellana has been requested to conduct the seminar and partake his wealth of skills and experience in sabong officiating.

“We are very grateful to the NFGB for considering Bicol as the next venue for this sentenciador seminars which I was told will be done nationwide with the support of Thunderbird”, BIGBA President Bong Gazmen stated. “This will definitely improve and help professionalized cockfights officiating in Bicol” he added.

For the part of the NFGB, its Executive Director Arnel AƱonuevo said “Thunderbird has been NFGB’s partner since the beginning and we are continuously working towards a better and bigger gamefowl industry”.

BOY GEGATO CHAMPION AGAIN

GEGATO CONQUERS THE NORTH  : (l-r Michael Villera, handler Levi Camus, Marlon, Boy Gegato & Engr. Art Gaspar) LOYAL THUNDERBIRD-USER Reigning International Derby champion Boy Gegato shocked the cockers of Pangasinan, La Union and Ilocos with a sterling  5-0 win-loss performance for a solo championship finish in last Saturday's Ventura Cokpit Arena's P.5M 2nd Anniversary one-day 5-Cock Derby in San Carlos City. Unleashing his feared JVG Gilmore-Roundhead aces, Gegato's BG HIGH MOUNTAIN entry (in partnership with Engr. Gaspar) ruled over entries Yanyan of E. Buenafe;  AMU; HGS of Hermie Saayso; JJ Guide and house bet Jokers Wild. The victory came as a big surprise considering the birds came all the way from Bacolod, arriving in Manila on Thursday morning and then brought to Pangasinan at 11:00 p.m. for a 4-hour trip to Pangasinan.

THUNDERBIRD-USER WINS 2011 CANDELARIA DERBY CROWN

Pakit Causing – a longtime user of Thunderbird products and godfather of Thunderbird’s Gamefowl Specialist for Panay Island Dr. Merlita Justalero, posted the highest score of 6.5 points, of a possible seven, to bag this year’s championship of the prestigious annual Candelaria 7-Cock International Derby held from January 29 – February 2 at the Ilolilo Coliseum.

Duplicating Causing’s feat is returning Candelaria winner Johnny Jalandoni of Negros with his Pangga entry, in partnership with Lando Layson and B. Jucaban.

A native of Alimodian town (30 minutes from Iloilo City), Causing recently founded and is  now the President of the Alimodian Cockers & Breeders Association. His winning entry PBC Emerald had 3.5 points going into the finals where they hurdled all their three tough assignments to corner the top honors.

It was a sorry loss for Eddie Boy Ledesma (Fire & Ice Game Farm) on his 6th fight whose entry Nirvana JSY fielding an all-Hulsey line-up closed with 6 points for runner-up honors.
Also scoring 6 points apiece are the entries Rafael, JJJ Tres Bastos and Pol Dominguez’s Goldquest financed by Osang dela Cruz.

Thunderbird Power Feeds and Thunderbird Power Vet went all out with celebrity vet Dr. Hanzie Dal of the popular segment Inilog in the gamefowl telemagazine show Tukaan on hand to interview some of the finalists and the new Candelaria champion.

The annual world cocking event is hosted by the Iloilo Sportsmen’s Association represented by Mr. Chito Tinsay, and co-presented by Thunderbird.

Thunderbird’s 25-foot inflatable model of a rooster placed at the Coliseum’s entrance greeted the aficionados who enjoyed the games and the free photo booth wherein they had their souvenir pictures with the friendly Thunderbird Power Models.

Iloilo Coliseum’s officers include Chairman of the Board Atty. Claudio Jardiolin;  President & General Manager Luis M. Tinsay, Sr.; Vice President Luis C. Tinsay; Assistant Manager (Ret) Col.
