Briones, Wacnang Share 2012 World Slashers Cup Crown

Newspaper executive Rey Briones of Masbate permanently made his imprint in the history of Philippine cockfighting after scoring 8 perfect wins in the recently concluded 2012 World Slashers Cup 8-Cock Invitational Derby to bag his third title as world champion. The Spartans Game Farm owner won his first crown in June of 2003 via the Islander RB entry and injust last June with his bet  Spartans DR I.


Duplicating Briones’ feat is fellow Thunderbird Sabongnation team mate 3-time Kalinga province governor and congressman Lawrence Wacnang (Crowsland Silver Wings) in partnership with Cong. Cosalan, takes his first Slashers Cup – Wacnang biggest in addition to his LGBA Breeder of the Year title.

Solo runner-up honors went to DL Tingkoroni Tungkag – Vancouver of Dennis Loria & Arnel de Jesus.

Entries RAS – JR of Atty. Junjun Salazar and AAO Hitchcock of Gerry Ramos both lost in their final matches to end up with 7 wins apiece matching that of MRV San Rival of Erik Abella; and Group A  finals top finisher JT JGT Emerald of Jun Topacio

DEFENDING WORLD SLASHER CUP CHAMPION REY BRIONES POISED FOR A 3-PEAT; GROUP A FINALS SET TODAY


2-time World Slasher Cup champion newspaper executive Rey Briones displayed toughness and consistency with his fleet of Spartans Green Leg lines and Spartans Red strain after his two entries Spartans Palawan and Spartans Cuyo scored 4 wins and 3 points, respectively. The popular son of  Masbate province will try to win his third crown when he collides with equally undefeated bets in the championship set on Sunday, Jan. 22. 

Set today starting at 2:00 p.m.  with more than 100 exciting matches lined up is the finals among Group A standouts led by close friends 2007 WSC solo champ Wilson Ong of Dumaguete, 3-time WSC runner-up Nestor Vendivil of Nueva Ecija and 2011 WSC-2 defending co-champ Rikki Reyes of Laguna. Ong, Vendivil and Reyes founded and now the pillars of the newly-formed Philippine Federation of Gamefowl Breeders.

Reigning 2011 WSC-2 champion newspaper executive Rey Briones, after scoring a perfect 4-0 win-loss card during last Monday’s Group A elims opener, showed he has stockpiled enough ammunitions of ace roosters when he again ruled last Tuesday’s Group B 2-cock preliminaries with another 2 new entries finishing with perfect 4 wins out of 4 matches via his bets Spartans Palawan and Spartans Cuyo, to lead to today’s Group B 2-cock semis of the ongoing 2012 World Slashers Cup 8-Cock Invitational Derby.

Record Field Seen in World Slashers Cup 50th Year

The World Slashers Cup started by Don Amado Araneta in 1962 staged each year at the sports and entertainment mecca that is the Araneta Coliseum, enters its 50th year as the brightest and hottest torch burning continuously for Philippine cockfighting.

The semi-annual “Olympics of Cockfighting” hosted by the Pintakasi of Champions presented by B-meg Derby Ace and Thunderbird Power Feeds greets the Year of the Dragon with the biggest and most powerful cocking force ever assembled composed of the country’s finest pit heroes providing a brick wall of opposition against the invading foreign fighters from Japan, Germany, France, Malaysia, Guam, Saipan and the United States.

Set for January 16-22, hostilities will begin on the 16th with the first set of entries locking horns for their 2-cock eliminations followed by the second half of competitors taking on each other for their own preliminaries on the 17th. The 2-cock semis for Group A is on Jan. 18, while Group B meet again on June 19. The 4-cock finals for Group A is on Jan. 21 and the ultimate event is on Jan. 22 for the Group B finalists.

With 207 entries registered in January of 2009; 240 in January 2010 and 274 at the beginning of 2011, it is highly anticipated that the number of competitors will break the 300 mark for the first time.

Patrick Antonio (Sagupaan B-50) who ruled over 274 other entries in January last year and 2011 WSC-2 champions Rey Briones (Spartans DR-1), Boy Jiao & Ito Ynares (June 14 NCA Big Event Ynares Arena 220K Pot) and Rikki Reyes (@PR Knights Rian WRN) are expected to launch gallant defense of their titles.
