PATI YUNG 140 YEAR OLD LOBSTER NA NANANAHIMIK PINAKIALAMAN, NGAYON MALAMANG KINAKAIN NA NGAYON YON.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A giant lobster named George escaped a dinner-table fate and was released Saturday into the Atlantic Ocean after a New York seafood restaurant granted him his freedom, according to a statement from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
George the lobster was a "sort of mascot" for City Crab and Seafood in New York.
The lobster, which PETA said was 140 years old and weighed 20 pounds, had been confined to a tank at City Crab and Seafood restaurant in Manhattan when two customers alerted the animal group.
The PETA statement did not say how the extraordinary age estimate was determined, but restaurant manager Keith Valenti told CNN that lobsters can grow a pound every seven to 10 years, and he put George's weight at 18 to 20 pounds.

LET THIS BE A WARNING...

Dear Sir,

Just want to share with you that PETA is all over condemning our beloved sabong sport.
My daughter, a junior medical student at UP Manila- PGH told me that the PETA group held a forum at their university.

As expected, my daughter stood out and proudly told everybody that her father breeds fightingcocks, then related the TLC I give to the chickens, and refuted the PETA that sabungeros are not brutal to chickens and are far different from what they perceived us to be. That it is but the animal instinct of chickens to fend for themselves when pitted during spar, just like all other animals.

I hope the kids of all our kasabongs are smart enough to stand out and defend our sport when PETA visits their campuses.
More power to Bantay-Sabong.

"Prinsipe Sabong" Wins Filmfest Award

‘Prinsipe Sabong’ is more than
just a movie about cockfighting

http://www.malaya.com.ph/apr28/ente1.htm

Many independent films have made the country proud by winning awards here and abroad. Joining their ranks is “Prinsipe Sabong,” a film about cockfighting. It won the prestigious Remi Award for Best Feature last April 27 at the 42nd WorldFest-Houston Independent International Film Festival.

Winning that award wasn’t easy for “Prinsipe Sabong,” considering that cockfighting was banned in the USA in 2006 – and let’s not forget all the American animal rights groups out there. When you think about all it had going against it, it’s amazing that the movie was given its due recognition.

Luckily, the panel of judges at WorldFest saw “Prinsipe Sabong” for what it is. It is so much more than a movie about cockfighting – it is a celebration of cultural diversity.

“Prinsipe Sabong” stars Gardo Versoza as Joey Estevens, an actor who is also passionate about cockfighting. When his best gamecock loses to a breed of gamecock known only as “prinsipe sabong,” Joey becomes frantic, livid. Joey could not work and lost appetite as an actor. He was obsessed with the identity of prinsipe sabong and its whereabouts.

He quit showbiz and returned to his hometown, because he heard a rumor that was where “prinsipe sabong” was bred. Upon his return, Joey discovers that his father has decided to adopt four kids, thereby turning their house into an orphanage of sorts. Joey hated the idea, but his brother was fine with it. The ruckus started. What made it worst is the presence of Celine – girlfriend of his brother Jeffrey, whom Joey later fell in love with.

“Prinsipe Sabong” also stars Katya Santos as Celine Montemayor and Allan Paule as Jeffrey Stevens. It is a far cry from the kind of movies Filipinos are accustomed to. The story is very simple, real and is built around superstitions related to the sport of cockfighting says Edwin G. Monton (executive producer).

It was produced and written by Armie C. Fernandez and directed by Yeng Grande. Visit their website (www.princeofcockfightingthemovie.com).

“Prinsipe Sabong” is also slated to receive the Bronze Best Picture award at the Mexico Film Festival on May 31, and there will surely be more in its future.

Pao Malvar's 1st Hertitage Cup story - April 2008

PAO MALVAR : CONTINUING LEGACY OF THE LUISITA BREEDS

The minute he won the solo championship of the United Gamecock Breeders Association’s 2008 Heritage Up 9-Bullstag Derby last April 29, Pao Malvar called up his “Lolo U” (Esting Teopaco) to invite the highly-respected cocker-breeder of the Stinger fame to come and join him in

Araneta Coliseum wherein the finals was being held.

The old man’s reply was. “Hindi na. Araw mo ‘yan. Manok mo na ‘yan (No need. It’s your day. They are already you’re birds).

However, the celebration seemed to be not complete without his mentor, so, Pao sought the help of his Lola and in minutes the great Stinger himself was posing for Larga with his protégé at the Big Dome, sharing with his grandson what most gamefowl breeders would consider a victory of a lifetime.

Yes, Pao Malvar has earned a name for himself, thereby continuing a legacy and ushering the re-emergence of Luisita breeds of gamebirds that made cocking history from the 70s to the 90s capped with three World Slasher Cup championships.

THE RIGHT BREED

With the victory, Pao may have found the nick combination after only four years since he first started to follow the footsteps of his Lolo Esting and of course Lolo Peping (Cojuangco).

Using mainly Dink Fair Sweaters acquired from the RED Game Farm of Raffy Campos & Edwin Arañez, Pao has produced some of the most “lethal line of fightingcocks in today’s competition” as observed by an aficionado who was able to follow Pao’s epic success.

“I crossed them with Bruce (Barnett), Kearneys (Whitehackle), Gilmores and Whites”, Pao revealed.

THE SELECTION

With the help of trusted handler Niño Yee and farm manager Christian Talon, Pao selected 24 birds from his remaining stags last year. Luckily, 17 out of the 24 shed their original feathers and by December of 2007 they have gone trough their first moulting and were sporting fresh plumage.

“Malaking bagay na nakapagbihis sila” (It’s a big plus that most of them have change feathers), Pao exclaimed.

“Halos lahat ng manok namin sinisilip ng kalaban”, Niño stated. Adding that they can not blame them because 8 out 9 that won the championship for their Sunhaven Stinger entry have already finished moulting.

It was observed that most of the top finishers in this year’s Heritage Cup have fielded fully-moulted birds.

THE QUEST

The quest started last April 8, when they entered the 3-bullstag elimination in Araneta Coliseum, with a 3-0 sweep. Two of the three winners were without a scratch.

In the 1st match, they fought a Grey (Dink/Grey Stinger line from Boy Jiao); the 2nd was a ¾ Sweater-1/4 Gilmore and the 3rd was Kearney from RED/Sweater cross.

After their semi-final campaign in San Juan Coliseum wherein the three birds they fought all receive burst of applause and cheers from the crowd, it was already being predicted that they will sweep the finals.

In the semis, they unleashed a rooster (4th fight) out a Sonny Lagon broodcock (a gift to his Lolo) and Dink from RED. The 5th was a Dink Fair-Bruce Barnett Left-Out cross and the 6th was a Sweater/Allen Hinds Roundhead.

“The fourth was our best fight. It was finished in 8 seconds”, Pao & Niño agreed.

Came the championship, they fought a (7th) Bruce/White cross; a (8th) Dink-Bruce all-sweater cross and a son of a broodcock from Al Garcia over a Dink fair hen.

It was do-or-die on the final match with Sunhaven Stinger going up against Alex Tang’s Silverbuck entry. Pao’s bet was already standing champion going for nine points and solo victory, while, Tang’s was shooting for 8 points and a share of the championship with several others.

But Pao’s fate was already sealed.

FUTURE PLANS

With the prize money, Pao will be implementing improvements in his farm’s f

acilities and would go back to the United States in September to acquire more breeding stocks.

“Siyempre, yung mga natalo, magpapalit ng palahi ‘yan. Para sa akin, kahit nanalo kami, kailangan din na mag-infuse kami o sumubok ng mga bagong linyada”, Pao explained.

He expressed his disappointment that he was only able to produce 450 heads last year. He now plans to come up with 200 off-season stags more and probably 700 come breeding season.

Finally, Pao said he could never done it without the cooperation and dedication of his farmhands, especially Niño & Christian and master knifeman Jing Lecaros.

Asked how he felt the moment he won the championship, Pao admitted “Unbelievable. Parang nakalutang sa hangin”

A COCKFIGHTING FESTIVAL

A COCKING FESTIVAL

Festivals abound all over the country. Whether as a political gimmick or a noble campaign to promote a province, town or city, festivals of various themes, styles and forms have been introduced through the years. Considering its success in promoting and marketing a certain locality’s tourist attractions, products, trades, culture and people, festivals have practically doubled in number during the last five years.

Bacolod City for its part has the Maskarra Festival which is one of the most popular events in the Philippines. It’s being held in the month of October and during that time the annual stag derbies of the Negros Gamefowl Breeders Association (NGBA) and the Gamefowl Breeders Association of Negros (GF-BAN) are also staged.

There’s the Bangus Festival in Dagupan, the Sambalilo Festival in Paranaque, the Magayon Festival in Albay, the Pahiyas Festival in Lukban, Quezon, Sinulog in Cebu, Dinagyang in Davao and a lot more.

There are festivals for fruits, flowers, fishes, saints etchetera, but, despite the Philippines being considered the cocking capital of the world, no rooster or cockfights festival.

If any place in the country would consider coming-up with an event to commemorate or celebrate the Filipinos’ love for cockfighting, Negros, being the traditional rooster-basket of the country, should be the choice.

Considering the economic importance of gamefowl breeding and cockfighting to Negros and the minions of cockfights’ trainers and handlers that have been provided by the island not only throughout the country but in other countries as well, it is only fitting that Negros comes up with an annual celebration with cockfighting and gamefowl breeding as its theme.

How about a “Bulang-bulang Festival” ?

Through this type of festival, we can openly introduce gamefowl breeding as a profitable alternative business and cockfighting as an exciting competitive sport and pastime in the same manner as other themes are being presented.

The “Bulang-bulang Festival” can be a joint-project of Negros Orriental and Negros Occidental and can be another big tourist attraction not only to foreign visitors but local aficionados as well.

FINALLY, A NEW SABONG MOVIE IN THE MAKING by Rolando S. Luzong

(This article appeared in the March 2009 Issue of Animal Scene Magazine - a publication of Manila Bulletin)

FINALLY, A NEW SABONG MOVIE

IN THE MAKING

After a long wait, a lover of cockfighting finally took the risk of producing a sabong movie hoping to bring the popularity of Philippine cockfighting to a new level.

“The Cockfighter”

It was in 1974 when the Warren Oates-starring movie The Cockfighter hit the limelight.

Written by Charles Willeford, it was a story about Frank Mansfield who wanted to win the Cockfighter of the Year medal so much. After being disqualified for the "Cockfighter of the Year" award because of excessive drinking and talking during a fight, Frank has taken a vow of silence and refuses to talk until he wins the medal. He makes a bet with old friend Jack to be settled at the upcoming meet. Frank puts his car and his trailer on the line; he loses. Jack gets the trailer, and Frank's part-time girlfriend who goes with it. Frank's long-time girlfriend Mary Elizabeth wants him to get serious and settle down. But Frank has to raise some money for a new cock - $500 - then he can form a partnership with fellow cocking friend Omar Baradansky and make another try for that medal.

“Annie Sabungera”

Eight years after, in 1982, the Philippines through multi-awarded film director Pablo Santiago – father of singer-tv host Randy Santiago who apparently is a cockfight practitioner himself, came up with the sabong-fantasy flick Annie Sabungera starring Nora Aunor. Three years before this, in 1979, Aunor starred in the movie Annie Batungbakal which was inspired by the hit song of the same title by the Hotdogs.

I was not aware about this movie until one lazy-nothing-to-do afternoon, coiled in my sofa and toying with the remote control, I chanced upon an old movie with Nora Aunor in it. I was about to press the button again when I noticed that the “superstar” was holding a rooster. I said to myself, “this one I have to watch”.

The sabungero angle was very obvious with a considerable amount of sabong vocabulary employed as well some handling and conditioning techniques. I am almost sure that it was in the old San Juan Coliseum where most of the matches took place which is just understandable because of its proximity to LVN Studios.

Unfortunately, the movie was more on the fantasy side with “Annie” being a poor urban lass, blessed with a talking rooster.

“Sabungero”

It took 27 years before the tapes rolled again for a new movie about cockfighting. Simply titled Sabungero, the movie which is now on its second month of filming is aptly produced by JC Bernardo – owner of www.sabong.net.ph , the most popular cockfighting website in the planet.

The movie is led by character actor Joel Torre supported by Mark Gil, Robert Arevalo and Maritoni Fernandez with Leo Martinez and child wonder Timothy Marc, including a cast of thousands of cockers, of course.

Information about Sabungero is at the moment hard to come by or being kept a secret for obvious reasons. What is encouraging though is that the said sabong movie is fully supported by Thunderbird Power Feeds and Thunderbird Power Vet – the undisputed leader in the gamefowl feeds and vetmed industry, so it must be good.

I just can’t wait to see this one. I bet you are too.

Sabong website owner coming up with a cockfighting movie

"Sabungero" - the movie gets Thunderbird backing

JC Bernardo a.k.a. Sentenciador – proud owner of the most popular website in the world wide web (www.sabong.net.ph) devoted to cockfighting is coming out with a film with a sabong theme.

Simply titled “Sabungero”, the film stars Joel Torre, Maritoni Fernandez, Robert Arevalo, Mark Gil, Charlie Davao, Leo Martinez and child actor Timothy Mark – grandson of lady cocker-breeder Princess Naldo a.k.a. GoldenDragon.

Recognizing the film’s symbolic importance to the country’s gamefowl breeding industry and the sport of cockfighting, Thunderbird – the dominant leader in gamefowl health and nutrition, has agreed to exclusively sponsor “Sabungero”.

“Anything for the betterment of Philippine cockfighting”, says Thunderbird’s Product Manager Francis Martinez.

“I’m so happy and grateful for Thunderbird’s generous support”, stated an elated JC Bernardo, adding that he is just as thankful for the cooperation of cockers who consented to appear as extras in the shootings done at the Ibaan Cockpit in Lipa City, in Daang-Hari Coliseum in Bacoor, Cavite and in Biñan Cockpit in Laguna.

It was also announced that the final shooting day will be during the staging of the 2009 World Slasher Cup-2 at the Araneta Coliseum on May 12, 14 & 16.
